Biomedical engineering is an interdisciplinary field that incorporates principles of mechanical, electrical, and chemical engineering. Biomedical engineers apply these engineering principles and design concepts to solve problems that arise from the study of human physiology or health. This includes, but is not limited to, the acquisition of new knowledge and understanding of the human body or the design of new technologies and devices, processes and systems that advance human biology and medicine, or improve human health.
Biomedical engineers may be called upon in a wide range of capacities: to design instruments, devices, and software; to model the mechanics of the body; to research materials acceptable to the body; or to conduct research needed to solve clinical problems.
